A Short History of BPM

Sandy over at ebizQ is running with a great series of posts describing the history of Business Process Management.  Interesting to see how BPM has evolved over the years... especially the intersection of human to human workflow, and enterprise application integration.

Check out A Short History of BPM.  I am looking forward to the next instalments!

Business Process Management: Never Rest!

Great article by Andrew Spanyi over at Intelligent Enterprise.  Discusses the reasons why organisations seem to forget the 'management' part of Business Process Management.  More importantly, it makes it perfectly clear why not managing, and not improving your business processes is rediculous!

Must read for any organisation looking at streamlining business, automating, or looking for smarter ways to do business.  Just make sure you keep on improving those processes!

The 7 Deadly Sins of Business Process Management

I have been reading Sandy Kemsley's "Column 2" blog for a few months now...  and she has been posting some great information about Business Process Mangement.  Her recent posts on the Gartner BPM conference have been very comprehensive - and saved me a trip to the US!

Her post on the 7 Deadly Sins of BPM should be top of mind for anyone in this field...  Do the following at your peril!
  • Don't model your current process
  • Don't understand people and system requirements
  • Treat BPM as an IT problem
  • Focus on "architecture" in SOA rather than "service", which ensures that the business doesn't care about the project
  • Commit unnatural acts with existing applications
  • Hardwire your BPM application
  • Implement automation [of low-value processes] only
